How to Become a Successful Real Estate Agent (7 Easy Steps)

Real estate can be a fun, exciting, fulfilling and profitable career, but the competition can be tough, especially for new real estate agents. If you want to become a successful broker, you must work to emerge as one of the best brokers in the field. Here are seven tips to help you reach your goals.

How to Become a Successful Real Estate Agent

1. Build resilience.

Real estate can be a challenge for newcomers and it may take time to develop a steady stream of income. The ability to recover from failure and your determination can be the most important factor in the success of your property.

2. Learn about the small business.

Real estate isn’t just about being a good salesperson, it’s about running your own business. Becoming a successful real estate agent requires developing your skills in communication, marketing, social media, organization, newspapers, and financial planning.

3. Become an expert in your area.

Online real estate services like Redfin, Zillow, and Trulia have changed the industry by providing fast and free information with little user engagement. But the one thing that the Internet does not offer is personal knowledge and experience. Attend the training courses offered by your broker and get as many continuing education and professional development courses as possible. Connect with other agents who have more experience in a particular local area.

4. Create a referral network.

The most successful brokers work primarily through referrals, so it is important to build and maintain good relationships with buyers and sellers. Make it your main goal to put people on committees. We all deserve to be paid for our work, but helping clients get the best for them, regardless of your commission, will build trust that leads to referrals.

5. Find a good teacher or training program.

Pre-licensing classes will teach you a lot about legal definitions and calculations, but not so much about sales or customers. Real estate is the quintessential “learning on the job” profession, so it’s important to find someone who can teach you about the industry and inspire you to grow as a realtor. If you don’t have a specific mentor, find a broker who has developed training programs to help new agents succeed.

6. Provide good customer service.

As your career in real estate grows, you will be working with more and more clients. It is not uncommon for successful brokers to deal with 7-10 clients at a time. You have to be available to give everyone your full attention.

7. Make a successful plan and be responsible.

Many new runners start their careers with a lot of hope and enthusiasm, but they lack a roadmap to achieving their goals. Create a clear and detailed plan for success as a broker. Set goals, make a list of things to learn, develop a strategy for attracting customers, find a good contact management app, and build a tracking system. Ask your real estate agent if they have resources available to help you with your planning.

A great first step to a career in real estate is taking pre-licensing courses at Scottsdale Community College (SCC). SCC’s Real Estate Pre-Licensing Program will prepare you to qualify for the Arizona real estate licensing exam and for a career in real estate. The program meets the requirements of the Arizona Department of Real Estate and consists of REA201 – Principles of Real Estate I and II and REA290AH – Real Estate Seminar: Drafting Contracts.
